The Kentucky Humane Society (KHS) is a private, nonprofit organization that advocates for the humane treatment of companion animals.
Founded in 1884, KHS is the oldest and largest pet adoption agency and no-kill animal shelter in the state.
Through adoptions, education programs, and spay/neuter efforts, KHS offers proactive solutions to the pet overpopulation crisis in our area. Their mission is to create more compassionate communities through their efforts, and they envision a day when every companion animal is given the care, resources, and lifelong home they deserve.
In 2016, Mediaura created a new website for KHS. Now, two years later, we have launched their 2018 revision. We take pride in our role as their digital partner, and we are happy to do our part in helping KHS achieve their vision. The Goals of the Redesign
We had three specific goals for this redesign. First, we wanted to make the KHS website even more user-friendly. We wanted to ensure that users could find the exact information they were looking for and to make it as easy as possible for them. Most people who visit the KHS site already know what it is they’re looking for, so our job was to make the experience user-friendly and seamless.
There are several reasons why visitors might go to the KHS site. These reasons include adoption, donations, training classes, grooming and boarding options, promotional events, and the S.N.I.P. Clinic (KHS Full-Time Public Spay/Neuter Clinic). We made each of these categories easy to find under subcategories at the top of the homepage.
Scrolling down on the home page, we’ve created an eye-catching space to highlight a few of the main categories, with information on featured KHS events and latest news. Also, on the homepage, we’ve installed a running adoptions tracker and a form field to subscribe to the KHS monthly e-newsletter, Kennel Chronicles.
Our second goal was to give KHS a trendy design and feel. We accomplished this in several ways, by giving it an updated color palette and using fresh photography.
Thirdly, we wanted to give KHS website a user-friendly driven mobile menu.
How We Achieved the Redesign Goals
Our team has worked very closely with the team at KHS over the years to understand the exact needs of their organization and audience. Due to our collaboration with them, we were able to smoothly redesign their website in a way that addressed every issue they were experiencing and helped us achieve every goal. This redesign consisted of:
- Creating an easily navigable menu structure with a user-friendly mobile menu.
- Utilizing strong images and concise content to create a user-friendly aesthetic on both desktop and mobile devices.
- Prioritizing mobile usage for the design process.
- Leveraging the latest SEO best practices throughout the design in terms of programming, design, and content.
- Implementing a new color palette that is pleasing to the eye.
- Updating the website to meet 2018 design trends.
- Utilizing building methods that would make it easy and convenient for KHS to do their own updates in-house, per their request.
